Polish Spirit in Anime
Submitted by mhulboj on Thu, 2006-05-04 17:51.
While watching anime you can find some curious accents from such exotic cultures as Polish. One thing was the Fiat 126p car in the FLCL anime (being used as an operational vehicle...).
Recently while watching AMG2 (Ah! My Goddess: Everyone Has Wings) (really recently - as the airing was on 27th of April and the AnimeYuki release followed shortly after that) I could see another curiosity - reference to Polish alcohol.

Update: right now I am trying to get a screencapture from the FLCL anime with Fiat 126p. However there is one problem - I don't have FLCL on my machine right now - and it will take a short while to download it. I expect to post it tomorrow (8th of May)
And one more (image taken by Siano):

(OO)!!
Why do you think polish culture is such an exotic?? I wonder how these japanese know about Fiat 126p.. I know, they have joburokka (zubrowka) in stores, but spirit?? :].. Man!! I love them more and more..
Exotic culture
Well, I have seen many inspirations from European culture in anime, and I think that for them Europe might seem a bit exotic in a same way as Japan is exotic for us. I have heard that they fancy Polish culture a bit (Chopin music, and some more) - still maybe 'exotic' was a bit exaggerated.
Hahaha
Hey :D I'm from polend :D Uor culture is not exotic ;) True is that we drink a bit to much :D (i like in one of the bigest places in poland where is making wodka :D polska(polisch)wodka(vodka), GIN Lubuski and many others :D) But say what you see exotic in our culture ? O and please say what is this anime what say about my counbtry culture ?
OMFG
OMFG
and not everyone is drinking alcohol here. ;]
Russian people dink much
Russian people dink much more than polish. No-one cane beat them.
SO, please don't make our country full alcohol addicted people. Not all of us are drinking so much and even if they use such stuff, they drink it in moderation amount. Alcohol like "spirutus" is used mostly by BUMs not by typical citizens.
yes exactly! typical
yes exactly! typical citizens use vodka [only 40 percent] or rum xD [ugh, like 70?]. it's russians who drink spiryt.
You forgot Zytnia.
thre's more:

Re: you forgot Zytnia
Thanks for the information. I've seen Bebop serie twice but it was before I was paying attention to these tiny little details.
You forgot about Zoladkowa Gozka :) :D
Zoladkowa Gozka is THE BEST!!!
And what about Sliwowica ??
You completly forgot about Sliwowica the famous Polish Highlanders "brandy" :) it has 70% and you cannot buy it in any store, only certain people can sell it too you or you can make it yourself.
edgecrusher wrote that you can drink "zacier" which is a little bit crazy because "zacier" is a half product used to make vodka.
I really don't like
I really don't like genalization... There are all types of people in every country.
And what about spirytus - the famous alcoholic drink? Well - you can buy it - so do I. And I use it. For cleaning, not drinking.
If u ever been to polish, u
If u ever been to polish, u will see, that russian people is kind of alcoholic noobs. Polish alcoholics rox and no one can beat them! If someone don't think so, i can beat them ;]
Quite frankly- 40% of
Quite frankly- 40% of alcohol in vodka is standard, but I can't imagine someone drinking dentaturat or pure spirytus. It is good for cleaning, but lethal if someone is "bright enough" to drink it. Also, we Poles are not drinking freaks or something like that- we are not Russians (only them are able to drink a whole glass of vodka and say "got more?") :]
Anyway, we got very old and rich culture, so no wonder it inspires people all over the world.
You forgot about Balsam
You forgot about Balsam Pomorski, highly ranked polish liquor, but better cause cheaprer :D
about balsam...
according to balsam and other cheep alcohols on polish market, i think the best of the best are home-made ones ^_^
also bimber od ukraincow and ruskich is kind of hardcore
balsam
and what about 'Balsam Kresowy'? It is delicious too.. ;D
its pretty nice
Funny :D
Hehe!I like it!
But Polish refferences in anime/culture are not so strange at all! There's an anime about Polish Monk who were helping japanese kids after II World War-the title of anime is "Boundless love".He's name was Zenon and he received nickname "Zeno" in Japan.By some confidence,my mother knew him.She told that he was allways happy and influenced others with posotive vibrations :)I heard that people who live in Nagasaki and were under his cusody are really thankful to him. He and other monks (mostly they came from Poland) estabilished an monastery under invocation of St.Francis in Nagasaki which exist till today.
But Zeno died 8 years ago...
And the second thing I spoted in japanese production was in game...Metal Gear Solid 3.Talk to Eva some times in Preschera Cave, and maybe you will hear her tale about polish solders who died during 2nd World War by massacre in Katyn-Russland.
Polish references in MGS
there is also a reference to the WWII in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for MSX. when Petrovich, Natasha and Snake are escaping through a sewer, she remembers what her mother told her about whe she was a child:
"Fate? Yeah, maybe... I was told a lot when I was a child. From my er... about the Warsaw uprising in World War 2 Poland. She ran through a sewer for days and fled the Nazis. Soaked with mud... blackened... one ouldn't even recognize faces. She is still haunted by the war, even today..."
Im a Pole and 96% alcohol is
Im a Pole and 96% alcohol is not exotic..its a standard here :D
Polish liquors
I suppose much more popular in certain places is alcohol denat. ('denaturat') which is, as far as I know, 'only' 70%, but has this magnificent violet tint and unforgettable flavour... Some say it's poisoned, but the rumour is that a fresh bread is a perfect filter to get rid of poison. ;-)
Spiryt
Hi
I'm from Poland too.I love Fiat 126p and I think that polish alcohols are the best in the world :D.I'm proud of it :D.Come visit our country and try to bit us in drinking :P
exactly, not everyone. there
exactly, not everyone. there is a group of people called "moherowe berety". they don't drink :) but they are much more degenerated than BUMs
by the way BALSAM POMORSKI is great!!!!:)
Been there seen all
I've been to wales for about half a year. And I can say, that we (poles) almost dont't drink at all!!!
I saw pissed completelly ladies crawling on the ground, vomiting around... Haven't seen anything like that where I live, and I live in one of the biggest cities.
Drinking is attached to our history, but if you compare us to russians, you'll see, we don't drink that much.
Whatever I'll say, and whatever you will... alcohol is good as hell :)
Maluszek
Ahahahahah - maluch rox!! :D I had one - it was my first car :] But i flip it over on its roof. It`s dead now but he`ll always remain in my memmories (and friends of mine who were driving it with me) :]
About alkohol - hmmmm everyone is drinking so i don`t get this whole idea to make it something strange and "Polish". You can dilute it with water and make some nice home-made vodka (with citrone 4 example) :] I like beer thou. LECH, TYSKIE, HENIEK, and everyone that is 0,66l :]
alcochol
I think that "spirytus" isn`t as good as "samogon" or "zacier". Fiat 126p was the most popular car in Poland in '90... That all. I think it isn`t exotic...
We are really proud that
We are really proud that this things are the most popular all around the world as the best Polish "ingridients";DThe truth is a little bit different now... You should try something modern;)yeah it is good idea...o i forgot:Dhave You ever dunk polish spiritus?i think no because only few people could drink it and the are still alive...but if You have strange head as we Polish...check it out
Ummmm... Poles really are
Ummmm... Poles really are NOT a bunch of boozers, unlike of what most of the previous comments might indicate. The main problem is the fact that the communistic order has left some stereotypes in the polish community that are hard to erease, even now, after about 17 years since the fall of communism. We might drink alcohol more then some other nations, but I wouldn't really take those comments above too seriously. Anyhow, good work finding that stuff ;) Expect for, well... is it just me, or does that vodka bottle from CB have NO relations to Poland AT ALL? :/
It does.
The red part of the label reads "Specjalna" (hard to notice due to quality).

Hey, you can also find other
Hey, you can also find other "polish" flavours even in very known anime movies. Like polish cigarettes (red "Sobieski") i Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence (link below):
